JOMBA! City lights Up the Night Friday 2 Sept - An Art Street Party of the Year

Press release: 29 August

JOMBA! City lights Up the Night

JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience presents what promises to be Durban’s art street party of the year this Friday at 7pm.

Delving head first into a site-specific encounter with the city centre, JOMBA! City is an amalgamation of dance, music, art, installations, lights, sound, film, and one or two VERY happening DJ’s.

Supported by the City of Durban as one of the Celebrate Durban events, JOMBA! City offers a safe and spectacular evening in the Durban city centre amidst statues of Queen Victoria and road plaques that honour struggle heroes amongst the pomp and ceremony of the City Hall backdrop and the everyday reality of the pedestrian crossings. All these form the backdrop to a night out that will get you face to face with the beautiful mix that is the Durban art and contemporary dance scene, all carefully curated by David Gouldie.

As you wander through the closed off cultural precinct in front of the City Hall, you will meet Linda Vargas and her flamenco dancers, surrounded by a marimba band backing up a group of Durban’s finest breakdancers. Buy delicious food items from the I Heart Market vendors, a beer from the bar and walk through art installations by the likes of Peter McKenzie, Karen Logan and Neil Coppen. Find Doung Anwaar-Jahangeer’s “Ma Dlamini” who looks a lot like Queen Victoria … and finally on the main stage, performances by Dusi Dance Company and Johannesburg’s celebrated Tshwane Dance Company.

A highlight of the evening is France’s two premier B-Boyz, Junior and Stylistik, dancing alongside Durban’s Life Check crews. This is sure to be a street dance encounter that reminds us of the talking souls that dance across nation and nationality.

The night ends with a rousing party that includes Crazy White Boy, DJ Switch and DJ Veranda Panda. Durban’s inimitable Iain Ewok Robinson is the MC for the event and watch out for some of Durban’s finest rap artists.

Tickets are R50 and  available on the night at the two entrance gates (one in Anton Lembede Street opposite the Royal Hotel and the second in Dr Pixley Kaseme Road).

The 13th JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience is organized by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) and supported by National Distribution Trust Fund (principal funder), HIVOS, City of Durban, French Institute of South Africa, Goethe Institut of South Africa.
