The dance film WHO IS THIS?... Beneath My Skin – Layer 2, by Desiré Davids, is a sequel to her Jomba! 2010 performance Who Is This Beneath My Skin?
This South African dancer-choreographer seems to have developed an obsession with making work that is about herself; her personal battles. It was disappointing that the performance was a standalone projection which is subtitled Coloured The Chameleon Dance. The spoken text felt too cheesy and the use of last year's footage seemed a bit of a cop out.
Although the screen dance version was disappointing, in comparison to the original performed work, there was a truth that projected itself into my head as I looked through the eye glass of the screen into Davids' soul. The work was honest and for that it deserves a level of respect. However, it was more like a documentary rather than an autobiography.
